Nonlinear theory of Alfven wave generation in the magnetosphere is developed through an analysis that takes fast particles into account. It is shown that Alfven waves will accumulate in regions where the hot ion pressure is least, and the energy density of these waves may reach significant values in such regions. Nonlinear instability of Alfven waves may occur at small azimuthal wave numbers.
