The parametric excitation of an Alfven wave and a magnetosonic wave, by a magnetosonic pump wave propagating obliquely to the magnetic field, is analyzed with attention to the nonlinear system of three waves in a uniform, unbounded, ideally conducting and compressible plasma. It is found that one can obtain growing parametric instabilities when wave numbers and frequencies fall within a limit, at which excited wave frequencies and growth rates, and the threshold pump intensities, are functions of the wave numbers and the frequencies of three waves. Both the standing and propagating pump cases have excited wave growth rates which depend on pump power intensity and the beta ratio. It is concluded that Pc 3-range hydromagnetic wave parametric excitation theory is more attractive for beating geomagnetic pulsations than linear resonance theory.
