Indirectly-driven cylindrical implosions on Nova(W. W. Hsing and N. M. Hoffman, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78), 3876 (1997).^,(W. W. Hsing et al.), Phys. Plasmas 4, 1832 (1997). have resulted in the first direct observation of nonlinear mode coupling between machined ``mass-modulations'' and illumination asymmetries in convergent geometry. Cylinders with C_8H_7Br ablators, CH pushers, and a thin C_8H_6Cl2 marker layer are transversely mounted in a scale-1 Nova hohlraum. The cylinders have sinusoidal perturbations of mode m=10. The hohlraum is driven by eight laser beams creating an initial imprint of a m=4 asymmetry in the x-ray drive. The perturbations grow from acceleration at the ablation surface by the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, and also from Bell-Plesset effects from convergence. Analysis of the feedthrough to the marker layer shows that the distorted images are the result of the fundamental m=10 and 4 modes, and weakly nonlinear coupled m=10-4=6 and 10+4=14 modes. The phase and amplitude of these modes are consistent with theory.(S. W. Haan, Phys. Fluids B 3), 2349 (1991). Work supported by DOE Contract W-7405-ENG-36.
