A three-wave decay-interaction model explaining the enhanced narrow-band radiation observed in the earth magnetosphere is proposed. It is demonstrated theoretically that an upper-hybrid wave of finite amplitude can decay to produce an electrostatic lower-hybrid ion-cyclotron wave propagating perpendicular to the external magnetic field and either a left-hand-circular-polarization electromagnetic wave propagating along the field or ordinary-mode radiation propagating across the field. The nonlinear dispersion relations are derived, growth rates are calculated, and numerical results demonstrating the applicability of the mechanism to the magnetosphere are included.
