A study of the nonlinear behavior of a large-amplitude ion cyclotron wave in an inhomogeneous Maxwellian plasma propagating in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic field is described. Nonlinear shift of the ion gyrofrequency by the electrostatic ion cyclotron wave is found to detune the resonance between the ion cyclotron wave and the ion drift wave, thereby stabilizing the drift-cyclotron instability. Solution of the nonlinear wave equation reveals a relaxation oscillation of the amplitude, possibly similar to the bursting instability observed in mirror machines.
