Results of a detailed investigation of barium ionization and luminescence processes at the early stage of expansion are presented. Barium bunch expansion into free space in the solar radiation field is considered. Spatial-temporal dependences are determined for populations of excited electron states which determine the barium luminescence, electron and ion concentrations and temperatures, and propulsion characteristics of the expanding bunch. The absolute values of the radiation coefficients are determined for the experimentally most useful spectral lines.
