We study the non-standard interaction(NSIs) effects on neutrino oscillations. Using perturbation method we present generic formulas for the effective mixing angles of the PMNS neutrino mixing matrix by considering NSIs at source, detector as well as during the propagation of neutrinos through matter. Analytical expressions are presented to relate the effective mixing angles with that of the vacuum mixing angles of the PMNS neutrino mixing matrix. Two separate cases with large and small values of one of the mixing angles $\theta_{13}$ have been discussed in detail. Taking into account the non-standard interactions we have reanalyzed the $\theta_{13} - \delta$ allowed region given by recent T2K experiment. We have given various plots showing correlations among NSI, $\theta_{13}$ and $\delta $. For magnitude of NSI above about 0.15, T2K experimental data could still allow zero value for mixing angle $\theta_{13}$.
