A theoretical investigation is presented of nonlinear effects on the stability of a screw pinch in a cylindrical system surrounded by a uniform pitch magnetic field in an incompressible pressureless plasma. Normal mode analysis is used to obtain a linear dispersion equation governing the interface stability, and a perturbation technique is used to obtain the nonlinear Schroedinger equation for the time variation of amplitude. Calculations are made for m equals 1 kink modes in a sharp-boundary plasma pinch, and a nonlinear analysis for the theta pinch and the z-pinch is also discussed.
