Observations of temporal variations of the solar UV spectral irradiance over several days to a few weeks in the 160-400 nm wavelength range are presented in detail. The measurements were made by the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet experiment on the NIMBUS-7 satellite during the period November 7, 1978, to October 26, 1979. The spectra of the variations in solar UV radiation caused by active-region evolution and solar rotation are presented for the 15 largest variations. To a first-order approximation, these 15 cases have essentially the same spectral shape and a small range in intensity. At wavelengths shorter than about 208 nm, the aluminum continuum enhancement dominates the spectra; at longer wavelengths, the magnesium continuum and lines dominate.
