A study of the nighttime enhancements in electron densities at Ahmedabad (lat., 23 deg 01 min N; long., 72 deg 36 min E) is presented. From the morphological study, it is inferred that the enhancements in electron densities are usually accompanied by an upward movement of the F-layer. The anomalous behavior of nighttime F-layer has been discussed in terms of neutral wind and equatorial E x B drift velocity. The appropriate choice of these physical parameters taken together in the equation of continuity of plasma for the F-region at Ahmedabad helps to maintain the level of electron density near the observed level. However, the extreme variations in these parameters cause anomalous change in the electron density and in the height of the F-layer, which are qualitatively similar to the observed behavior. The computed results show that the observed enhancements in electron density can be due to the redistribution of plasma in the vertical column of ionization.
