The night-time ionospheric absorption in the D-region as a function of latitude (L equals 6.0-2.5) and time has been studied for seven magnetospheric storms using the uniform Finnish riometer network and A3-measurements from Kuehlungsborn (G.D.R.). Two components may be discerned in the absorption. One component is observed during the main phase of the magnetospheric storms. The other component tends to build up during the recovery phase in medium latitudes and is clearly separated from the first one. Absorption increases of the second type are well known in medium latitudes and have been described as 'post-storm effects' or 'storm-after effects'. The poleward boundary of the post-storm absorption belt has been found to be a function of storm-time, reaching even L equals 4. The onset, duration and amplitude of the post-storm effect has been studied as a function of storm-time, latitude and of the intensity of the preceding storm. The post-storm effects in subauroral and medium latitudes are absorption increases of the second type.
