A one meter high-throughput Ebert-Fastie spectrometer was used to obtain night sky spectra in the 7220-7450 A region of the OH (8-3) band. A spectral resolution of 2 A was attained and auroral contamination was avoided by taking data in magnetic quiet times. Individual OH rotational temperatures were calculated from 30- and 60-min integration periods, yielding temperatures accurate to 5 K. Three year mean temperatures for the first 4 mo of the year in 1976-78 were 229, 224, 213 and 193 K, respectively. No significant influence of the solar cycle/geomagnetic activity effect on the mesopause temperature was detected. The temperature averages were nearly 15 K higher than those predicted with the CIRA (1972) model, yet displayed the same downward trend with progress of the year.
