An observation performed by the SIGMA experiment on board the GRANAT satellite has given a negative result for the detection of hard X-rays from the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. We discuss the implications of this result for the 'Unified Scheme' of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and for this galaxy in particular. It imposes conditions on the absorbing material, if one assumes that a typical Seyfert 1 hard X-ray continuum is indeed hidden in the nucleus.
