Recognition for teachers The Institute of Physics has continued its programme of recognition for inspiring teachers with nine Teachers Awards in 2000, one at primary level and eight at secondary. The quality and quantity of nominations for secondary awards was very encouraging, especially those nominations made by students, but the number of nominations for teachers in the primary sector was disappointing. The award winners are:

Annual Congress More details are now available on the various activities at this event taking place on 27 - 30 March 2000 at the Brighton Conference Centre. Among those organized by the Education Department are general science and technology hands-on activities for pupils aged 10 to 12 and more specific physics activities on Static Electricity for older students:
* A series of short talks with hands-on demonstrations of music and musical instruments given by musicians, manufacturers and physicists. * A chance for students in years 9 to 13 to experience music making from the professionals' perspective. Mornings, 28 to 30 March * Free demonstration lectures on Wednesday 29 March about static electricity, for year 8 upwards. * Hands-on activities including Techniquest, astrodomes and Mad Lab each afternoon from 27 to 30 March for years 6 and 7.
Five free demonstration lectures for the public have also been organized. These are suitable for a general audience including schools but will also interest those with a scientific background. There are two with a musical theme on Monday 27 March: Andrei Smirnov on `Physics-Music-Gesture' at 16:30 and Mike and Wendy Gluyas with `Musical Squares - Adventures in Sound' at 18:00. Tuesday's lecture (28 March) is `The Origin of the Universe' by Malcolm Longair at 18:00, whilst Wednesday's (29 March) is `Pioneers of Science and Technology and other Local Heroes' by Adam Hart-Davis at 18:00. The final lecture, on Thursday 30 March, is `From Baked Alaska to Banking: An Introduction to the Physics of Ice Cream' by Peter Barham, also at 18:00.

Otherwise feel free to turn up at 18:00 on any evening for an hour's free entertainment and education or come from 16:30 and experience Physics in Action first at the public sessions. There is also a programme of four INSET courses, some for teachers and some for technicians, and the Institute's Education Group will be holding a one-day meeting within Congress on Millennial Advanced Levels on Tuesday 28 March. The Schools Lecture Series - Seeing is Believing? This entertaining and informative lecture, aimed at pupils of about 14 years of age, continues its nationwide tour. Venues to be visited from mid-March onwards include Guildford, Brighton, Gosport, Leeds, Loughborough, Oakham, Wolverhampton, Framlingham (Suffolk), Hatfield and London. Courses and conferences Physics Update courses will be held in four locations this year. Details of the Malvern course (1 - 3 April) have already been circulated to schools and colleges. Details of the York course (8 - 10 July) will be circulated early next term. An Update course for teachers in Scotland will be held at Stirling University on 9 - 10 June and the final Update of the year will be held at Oxford University on 8 - 10 December. Entitled `Hands on, minds on: raising standards by sharing good practice', the Education Group's Annual Conference 2000 will be held at the University of Durham on 7 - 8 July. Posters A set of four full-colour A2 posters has recently been produced, with another set of four in preparation. The aim is to get across the message `Physics at the heart of everything' by means of eye-catching images - and to brighten up school and college labs and corridors in the process. Further explanations of the physics depicted are printed on the back of the posters. Sets of the first four posters are being circulated to all schools but additional copies will be available on request from schools.education@iop.org .
And finally ... The Institute's Schools and Colleges Affiliation Scheme is to be relaunched later this year, as a free scheme for all schools and colleges which will provide low-cost items on a regular basis. There will also be a second, subscription tier giving access to Physics World or Physics Education . We will endeavour to provide more details about this as soon as we can. Another recently approved idea is that of a new class of Institute membership for school students and this also will be explained at a later date.
