Lasing has been achieved in mercury atoms due to seven new infrared transitions. Investigation of the laser action and afterglow of the lines showed that pumping of the laser transitions in the afterglow of Hg I is performed by collision-radiative recombination of mercury ions. Pumping in the current pulse is carried out by electron collisions. A diagram showing the different level populations in Hg I is provided.
