Magnetic reconnection is a universal process that converts magnetic energy into particle energy in space, astrophysical and laboratory plasmas. Two most critical issues of reconnection, namely the physical mechanism of energy conversion and the time scale, still remain to be understood in collisionless plasmas. Recently, in-situ measurements have confirmed the Hall signals that are associated with collisionless reconnection. Our theoretical work [L. Dai, Phys. Rev. Lett., 2009] provides new insights into the origin of reconnection-associated Hall signals. Calculations indicate that the evolution of Hall signals is interrelated with the global-scale dynamics of the reconnection electric field. We will focus on how these insights could improve the understanding of energy conversion mechanism of collisionless reconnection.
