We have improved our modeling of cometary spectroscopy for Deep Impact data. Our model is designed for optically thick comae, using Coupled Escape Probability for our calculations of radiative transfer.
There are several areas of improvement in our recent work:
1. We have redesigned our code to model polyatomic as well as diatomic molecules.
2. We are implementing CEP for spherical situations in addition to plane parallel. This avoids having to make plane parallel approximations for a comet's coma, which in the region near the nucleus (as in Deep Impact observations) may be a poor approximation.
3. Coma morphology: We use a well defined model of features within the coma such as jets, outbursts and other natural variations, as well as DI ejecta.
