Using Magsat data, a new set of high-resolution vector anomaly maps at satellite altitude are derived after a careful selection of the data; a reduction of the attitude solution errors; and step-by-step reductions of the main field, its secular variation, and the magnetospheric and ionospheric fields. The new vertical anomaly maps reveal the existence of a distinct pattern of large anomalies over ocean basins, a feature that was not hitherto reported. It is shown that some of these anomalies, particularly in the North Atlantic and the Indian Oceans, may be correlated with the age of the lithosphere and that there exists a significant simialarity between magnetic and geoid anomalies above ocean basins.
