Scattering of neutrinos via emission or absorption of neutron-fluid density fluctuations, or phonons, is investigated. The behavior of phonons in a neutron fluid is examined, and a dynamic structure factor that describes the emission and absorption of phonons of given energy and momentum is used to determine the rate for a neutrino to scatter from one (energy, momentum) state to another. Numerical results for the neutrino mean free paths against phonon emission and absorption are presented for neutrino energies and temperatures of 1, 3, 9, and 27 MeV; values for the mean changes in neutrino momentum and energy are also provided. It is found that for neutrino energies or temperatures of at least about 10 MeV the mean free paths can become comparable to, or considerably smaller than, the physical dimensions of an imploding neutron core and can be comparable to the mean free paths for other processes that limit neutrino propagation.
