We study the possible distortions of the evolution of the early universe caused by the oscillations of a standard neutrino (νc, νμ or ντ) into a light ``sterile'' neutrino state, a gauge group singlet νs. The effects on the standard big bang nucleosynthesis are considered in the full space of the mixing parameters (δm2 sin 2θ). A significant portion of this parameter space is thereby excluded, or at least made highly improbable.
