The paper describes the nephelometric instrumentation aboard the Venera 9 and 10 spacecraft used to study the altitude structure and microphysical characteristics of the aerosol component of the atmosphere and clouds of Venus. Preliminary results of measurements of the effective values of the directional scattering indices as a function of altitude are presented. The results indicate a fairly high transparency of the clouds of Venus, which are similar to light fog or haze. The aerosol component below 49 km is apparently not homogeneous, and near 49 km cloud condensates play a role in its formation.
