We propose to obtain NIRI spectroscopy of 3 very bright, strongly-lensed arc systems, which we have discovered as part of a systematic SDSS arc search program. We have recently spectroscopically confirmed these systems as lensed Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at redshifts z=2.00, 2.03, and 2.38, making them 3 of the brightest known lensed z > 2 LBGs. The proposed NIRI observations will measure the expected strong Halpha, [O II] 3727, [O III] 5007, 4959, and Hbeta emission lines that will allow us to determine star formation rates, metallicities, dust attenuations, and dynamical masses for these high-redshift galaxies. In addition, the combination of high surface brightness, lensing magnification, and 5-10" lengths of the arcs will allow us to probe spatial variations in the physical properties of these LBGs at spatial resolutions of about 1-2 kpc ( 1") and smaller. Overall, the proposed NIRI near-IR data will be combined with additional data from our ongoing follow-up program to characterize these LBGs in detail from optical to mm wavelengths, using both ground- and space-based telescopes.
