Broadband 1-2 microns coronagraph images were obtained of the region around the V = +3.9 A5V star beta Pictoris using the NOAO near-IR camera at the CTIO 1.5 m telescope. The coronagraph consisted of warm focal plane occulting masks with projected diameters of 9, 15, and 21 arcsec, plus a Lyot aperture mask installed at the pupil plane inside the camera. The beta Pic images were reduced using coronagraph images of neighboring stars of similar magnitude and color. The edge-on particle disk detected by IRAS and previously visible only in 0.4-0.9 mu CCD images, is discerned in near-IR scattered light. The minimum radius to which the disk can be traced corresponds to the outer edge of the smallest occulting mask, about 5 arcsec or 85 AU at the distance of beta Pic. The maximum radius is about 15 arcsec or 250 AU. Implications of the scattering efficiency of the disk particles in the near-IR compared to visual wavelengths will be discussed.
