The NIRCam science objectives are the observations of "first light" objects, formation of stars and brown dwarfs, and planetary system formation, detection, and characterization. These three science programs are also the key objectives of the JWST program as a whole. The NIRCam instrument design is optimized for these objectives within the mission constraints.
NIRCam consists of four optics modules, two Imaging Modules and two Tunable Filter modules, each with a field of view of 2.3 arcmin square. Each Imaging Module field is divided by a dichroic into a short and long wavelength arm, which together give the full wavelength coverage 0.6 - 5 microns. The Tunable Filter modules provide imaging spectroscopy with a spectral resolution R = 100, one module covering 1.5 - 2.5 microns and the other 2.5-4.5 microns. Coronagraphic masks are provided in all four modules. A refractive optical design results in a smaller instrument size and mass, provides good images at the pupils for wavefront sensing and coronography, good access to the pupils and focal planes, and relaxed alignment requirements compared to a reflective design.
The NIRCam instrument is funded by NASA/GSFC under contract NAS5-02105.
