The present state of knowledge concerning the near-equatorial population of charged particles found in the earth's magnetosphere at energies from about 1 eV to 1 MeV is reviewed. For the population of the plasmasphere, particular attention is given to recent data on total number density and electron temperature, obtained largely from in situ wave experiments, and to ion mass spectrometer results showing the importance of minor ion species. The exploration of suprathermal populations, plasmas with characteristic energies from a few eV up to about 1 keV extending from the plasmapause outwards, is then discussed, and possible sources are considered. Studies of the products of the plasma sheet, an important source of trapped particles, are examined with particular regard to processes giving rise to magnetospheric particles. Efforts made to understand the sources, dynamics and composition of ring current particles are discussed, together with studies of the sources and electric and magnetic diffusion of the higher energy particles in the radiation belts.
