The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is currently performing a NASA Phase A design study for a spacecraft that will rendezvous with and orbit the near earth asteroid, 4660 Nereus. While in orbit around 4660 Nereus, the spacecraft will map the asteroid's surface and collect other science data for an eight month period. This paper identifies the science objectives and mission goals of the NEAR mission. The paper also focuses on the design factors and trade-offs made that resulted in a cost effective spacecraft that achieves the mission goals.
