In September 1971 a 35 cm long column of lunar soil weighting somewhat more than 100 g was returned to earth by the automatic lunar station Luna 16 from the northeastern part of the Mare Fecunditatis. This sea bears traces of slow sinking and has no coastal mountain ridge. The formation time of the Mare is similar to that of the large seas of the moon, called the Imbrian period. The sample was taken at a distance of approximately 100 km from the strongly dissected coast line, near the large craters and outside the ray system.
