With the flights of Ranger, Surveyor, the Lunar Orbiter and the Apollo missions the U.S. has accumulated a considerable amount of information on the moon. The studies carried out since the end of the Apollo program have however shown that the information received was insufficient in certain regions, and it has equally created the need for new data. Therefore, more missions to the moon in the decade ahead are forecasted by NASA programs, this time using automatic probes (Lunar Polar Orbiter and Lunar Rover) for further geophysical and geochemical research. The possibility of bringing Martian samples to the earth, the mapping of Venus, and a balanced program of study of the giant planets are discussed, including cooperation with ESRO.
