The effect on the moon of the gravitational potential caused by the earth's tidal deformation is studied by adoption of an unspecified inertial frame in which Newton's laws are valid. The interaction potential between the distorted earth and the moon is characterized by consideration of the properties of the rotation groups in three-dimensional space. The mathematical expansion of the tidal potential is presented. (The earth is assumed to be a perfect sphere.)
