Scientific paper

A description is presented of an alignment system for a multimirror telescope array in which optical beams provide a synthetic light beam stable table or optical reference flat upon which are located a series of heterodyne interferometers. The interferometers measure the relative phasing and tilts, of each element in the array. The use of translation insensitive interferometers, positioned on the light plane, makes it possible to achieve an essential insensitivity to small translations of the sensor systems within the reference plane. Attention is given to light plane synthesis techniques and a fabrication technique for a holographic-ring lens array.
