ELF/VLF waves (0.3 - 30 kHz) can be generated via HF (2-10 MHz) heating of the lower ionosphere. Since the D-region ionospheric conductivity is a function of electron temperature, in the presence of natural currents such as the auroral electrojet, a modulated or steered HF beam can turn a patch of the lower ionosphere into a large radiating antenna. However, the efficiency of this HF to ELF conversion process remains low. We present the results of a series of collaborative experiments aimed at understanding the generation process with an eye toward efficiency improvements. The aim of these experiments is to understand how a distributed source current in the ionosphere affects both the short and long distance electromagnetic fields. Using the HAARP facility in Gakona, Alaska, at 3.6 MW, we vary the beam shape, direction, duty cycle, and power, and apply the first frequency-time ramps to geometric modulation techniques with swept beams. We also report on efforts to use a dual-beam configuration to create two independent dipoles to control the direction of injected ELF/VLF energy. Finally, we present some results on long-distance detection of HAARP ELF signals up to 3200 km.
