A method that uses the gradient of the field of directions normal to the trajectory is applied to the study of the properties of motion in a field of arbitrary potential when the region of possible motions is small. Expressions are obtained which describe the field of directions, the boundaries of orbits, and the stable periodic orbits. It is shown how these expressions change when the region of possible motions becomes larger.
