57 Fe Mössbauer spectra have been obtained from samples of humic acid, fulvic acid and kerogen and from the organic material extracted from bituminous chalk with benzene-methanol. The spectra indicate that iron occurs in a trivalent form in the silicate residue of the humic acid fraction, as hydrated ferrous ions associated with the fulvic acid fraction, as pyrite in kerogen and in a form not detectable by Mössbauer spectroscopy in the benzene-methanol extract.
