We propose to use the KP-4m and Mosaic camera to obtain wide-field images of nearby field and cluster elliptical galaxies, in order to study their globular cluster (GC) populations at large radii. Because any theory of how a galaxy formed and evolved must be consistent with the properties of the galaxy's GC system, accurate measurements of the global properties of a galaxy's GC system are crucial for understanding galaxy origins. Estimates of such fundamental properties as the total number of GCs, specific frequency, and color gradient are not well-known, largely because the GC population in massive galaxies can extend to many effective radii. Studies with smaller areal coverage observe only a small fraction of a galaxy's GC population, requiring large extrapolations to deduce the global GC system properties. Our proposed observations would allow us to study the GC populations of the targets to r ~ 100 kpc (~ 10-15 effective radii) and more than double the number of early-type galaxies with measurements of their global GC system properties.
