NASA's Space Infrared Telescope Facility (later named Spitzer Space Telescope) will orbit the Sun trailing behind Earth using two cameras and one spectrograph to study the infrared universe. Cool objects give off most of their radiation as infrared light, which is less energetic than visible light. The formation of stars and planets is best studied with infrared light. The space telescope will also study our galaxy and look for more distant galaxies.
