The Prognoz satellite studies interplanetary and near-Earth shock waves. The Earth is fanned constantly by streams of solar wind. The solar wind forms a shock wave when it encounters the obstacle of the planet's magnetosphere. The existence of shock waves also in interplanetary plasma is demonstrated and the mechanism of formation and spread of these waves is studied.
