We have mapped a sample of active galaxies in their 12 CO line emission with subarcsecond spatial resolution using the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer. These observations give a unique insight into the molecular gas distribution and dynamics in the circum-nuclear regions of active galactic nuclei. In all galaxies the gas shows ring/spiral arm structures on both galactic disk ( 1 kpc) and on nuclear ( 100 pc) scales. The kpc "rings" are often associated with recent massive star formation contributing significantly to the bolometric luminosity. The circum-nuclear rings are associated with the narrow line regions. To investigate the interplay between the ISM and stars we use high angular resolution NIR imaging and spectroscopic data.
