Laboratory studies of the interaction of H atoms with nanosized aliphatic carbon grains under simulated interstellar conditions have shown the key role of this interaction for the formation of H2 molecules at high grain temperatures in the interstellar medium. New results of H atom irradiation experiments, showing the formation of molecular hydrogen on aromatic carbon grains and polyciclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules, are presented and their astrophysical implications are discussed.
