The reported investigation shows that a finite amplitude shear Alfven wave can be modulationally unstable over a wide range of physical conditions. The Alfven modulational instability is found to occur under conditions when the decay instability of an Alfven wave is forbidden. The investigation is based on the magnetohydrodynamic model of the plasma. Both pressure and resistivity are considered. A description is given of a mechanism for the spontaneous break-up of a shear Alfven wave once its amplitude exceeds a certain threshold.
