We report on a series of chromophores that have been synthesized with a
modulated conjugation path between donor and acceptor. Hyper-Rayleigh
scattering measurements of the best molecule show an enhanced intrinsic
hyperpolarizability that breaches the apparent limit of all previously studied
molecules.
