A large number of close binary systems (CBS) must be contained in the vicinity of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Calculations of the motion of such a system in the gravitational field of the AGN show that a close approach of the system's components - to the point of complete contact - is possible under certain conditions. Some astrophysical implications of this approach are discussed.
