How did the fundamental plane of galaxies come into existence? Using the Santa Cruz semi-analytic models (SAMs), we follow ensembles of galaxies in fundamental plane space (size, luminosity, and internal velocity) from high redshift to the present. We explore the parameter space of star formation, supernova feedback and other uncertain astrophysical processes in order to qualify their effect on galaxy evolution. Parameters for our SAMs are derived to provide good fits to data on nearby galaxies. The evolution of the fundamental plane is currently of great interest with the DEEP 2 survey beginning to collect information on it out to z ~ 1. Comparison of this and other data with SAM outputs will help to clarify the nature of the uncertain astrophysics.
