A method is presented to model the earth's magnetic field to very high degree and order in terms of spherical harmonics. The method is based, in part, on the method of Gauss-Legendre quadrature. The Gauss-Legendre technique is compared to the simpler Newton-Cotes quadrature. Both methods are applied to sets of radial field data computed from an n = 29 model simulating Magsat observations. It is shown that the Gauss-Legendre technique is generally more accurate and more efficient than the Newton-Cotes technique.
