Disturbances of the ionization associated with the March 22, 1979 storm are observed at Saint-Santin and at many European ionosonde stations. Eight days of Saint-Santin measurements show also changes in the ion and electron temperatures, in the electric field and in the neutral wind. A simulation of the mid-latitude ionosphere is carried out taking account of these parameters in succession. The influence of an increase of the intensity of the electric field penetrating instantaneously is quantitatively studied and clearly separated from the influence of the neutral wind. Very intense meridional neutral winds are observed during one day and several successive nights. To explain quantitatively the influence of the wind, the model has to take account of neutral composition changes.
