Simulation experiments have been conducted with a numerical three-dimensional GCM extending from 10 to 150 km altitude, in order to examine the dynamical response of the middle atmosphere to weak perturbations that are induced at stratopausal heights and clarify physical mechanisms significantly correlating lower and middle-stratosphere oscillations with sun rotation-associated solar variability. Evidence is obtained for a critical dependence of the poleward and downward propagation of disturbances generated near the +/- 40-deg latitudes' tropopause on the mean zonal wind field. Stationary and transient planetary wave forcing at the model's lower boundary plays a crucial role in the development of the response signal.
