The semiannual variation of thermospheric neutral density has been quantified through analysis of satellite drag data. Thermospheric density is high at equinox and low at solstice, with minimum in July and maximum in October. It has also been found that both the magnitude and the phase of the semiannual variation vary from year to year. The mechanisms of the semiannual variation are considered to be temperature effect and large- scale interhemisphere circulation driven by solar and geomagnetic forcing, and composition change due to lower atmosphere processes. In this study, we will simulate the semiannual density variation in a systematic way using the NCAR Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM). The simulation will be compared with and validated by satellite drag measurements.
