The 1954-1959 Fairview Peak-Dixie Valley earthquakes produced one of the most complex and extensive sequences of faulting in the intermountain U.S. during historic time. Study of this sequence provides insight into the processes of crustal extension that are currently taking place in the Basin and Range province. We have modeled the Pnl waveforms of earthquakes of this sequence to: (1) determine the source parameters for smaller (M < 6.3) earthquakes of the sequence that were poorly recorded at teleseismic distances and hence not modeled in previous studies of teleseismic bodywave data, (2) compare the results of source parameters obtained from modeling the Pn1 waveforms of the larger events (M > 6.3) with the results of teleseismic studies, (3) determine whether strainmeter records of Pn1 waveforms can also be used to estimate source parameters. Source parameters obtained for the larger events from Pn1 modeling are in agreement with previous studies. Source parameters estimated from strainmeter records also agree well with results of teleseismic analysis, suggesting the Pn1 strainmeter records may provide a useful addition to other studies of large earthquakes in the western U.S. Focal mechanisms obtained from modeling the smaller earthquakes varied 10°-20° in strike and rake from fault plane solutions determined from first motion studies. The Pn1 data support the results of previous studies that suggest the earthquakes of this sequence occurred along high angle faults (dip of 40°-70°) with significant components of right-lateral strike slip motion (rakes of - 135° to - 145°).
