A semiempirical model of the ionosphere which provides accurate daytime N(h) profiles in the stationary approximation has been modified in order to improve the accuracy of nighttime results. It is shown that by allowing for plasma flux from the magnetosphere and nighttime ionization of the molecular component and atomic oxygen, and also by using, when necessary, the effective diffusion coefficient, it is possible to model nighttime N(h) profiles with sufficient accuracy without explicitly accounting for the effects of nonstationary state.
