We are simulating experiments being done on the Falcon laser at LLNL to generate strong, cylindrically diverging blast waves of relevance to astrophysics. In particular, we are interested in producing and modeling radiative and non-radiative shocks. For our numerical simulations, we use the radiation-hydrodynamics code HYADES to simulate the evolution of this shock wave. Finally, we will compare our experiments with the data and with Sedov-Taylor blast wave theory, specifically considering the addition of radiative cooling and conduction in the formation of the blast wave. Our goal is to develop a laboratory setting for studying strong shocks of relevance to supernova remnants, gamma-ray bursts and other high-energy astrophysical phenomena.
