The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) is the largest association of variable star observers in the world that coordinates observations and evaluates, compiles, processes, publishes, and disseminates them to the astronomical community. The AAVSO has the world's largest data base of optical observations of variable stars extending back to its founding in 1911. The organizational structure of the AAVSO, its observing programs, its data management and processing, its international database, and its services to the astronomical community are discussed.
